This unique sound quality is present when entering a mosque, too. Upon entering the mosque, all sounds are amplified, so as a travel tip, be careful how loudly you speak because the sounds can travel far and fast, even when you may not intend them to. Inside the mosque it’s not uncommon to hear worshippers singing or chanting their prayers. Today, when I entered a mosque on the Asian side of Istanbul, I was fortunate enough to hear an adolescent girl who was learning how to chant scriptures from her holy book, the Qur’an. To me listening to her sing, reminded me how important it is to find a way to make a memory of what we learn. In a sense, her study strategy to remember the words that she needed to know, was to sing or chant them. This is perhaps an idea that you can borrow when preparing for your next history test.
